History of Mount Beauty and the Kiewa Valley

Nestled at the start of the Kiewa Valley, at foot of the state's highest mountain, Mt Bogong, in north-east Victoria, Australia, is the unique township of Mount Beauty.  Established in 1949, during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, the township was developed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to provide additional accommodation for the thousands of workers during the construction of the country's second largest hydro electricity scheme. This relatively young town of Mount Beauty, along with the surrounding townships of Falls Creek, Bogong, Tawonga South and Tawonga, are all part of a prospering tourist area with excellent services, accommodation, food and a wide range of recreational activities available for all ages.

The Kiewa Valley was settled by Europeans in 1835.  Prior to that time the region was visited annually by six Aboriginal tribes to perform rituals and settle disputes.  Groups would congregate at the base of Mt. Bogong to collect Bogong Moths.  Moths can be eaten raw or roasted over a fire.  These delicious creatures fly south from around the Qld/NSW border to breed in the cool Alpine areas during our summer.
