History of the NEDGA

The North Eastern District Golf Association had its beginning in July l924, and began with the keen interest of a few golfers in the Bright, Wangaratta, Benalla and Mansfield area's, who following some preliminary discussions on July 24th, convened the formation meeting under the chairmanship of a Mr. P McSwiney.  The meeting was conducted in the public library building at Wangaratta on the 11th July, l925.

It was at this meeting, that representatives from Beechworth, Wangaratta, Benalla, Bright Chiltern, Mansfield and Springhurst elected a committee which was lead by Mr T M Williams of Wangaratta for the next 12 years.  Secretary elected was Mr CF Henry of Bright, Mr P McSwiney, assistant secretary, and an executive committee of Mr TT Clarke, Mr CD Martin, Dr Lorsch, Mr C A Stoddart.  The handicap and management committee was president, Mr GA Home, Mr CD Martin, Mr LH Thompson, Mr AA Burt (Albury), Mr A Fischer, Dr Grant, Mr F Meadows, Dr Worland, Mr N Pickering, Mr D Hore, Mr AF Mascorini, Mr CF Findlay, Mr L Davis, Mr A Murray and Mr L Sayers.

Past Presidents of the Association following the l2 years of service from Mr T M Williams were Mr HH Guy of Beechworth - l937-l947, Mr GM Castles of Yarrawonga, served from l948-l957 and in his honour, the association conducts a special championship event annually.  The Graeme Castles Memorial 36 hole open handicap event.  Well known Bill Glen, of Mansfield, the District representative to the Victorian Golf Association, served as president froml958-l960, to be followed by Mr W Swan of Myrtleford l961-l962.  Mr C A McKenzie of Benalla, the association·s first life member served from l962-l964 and was followed by Mr Donovan, of Wangaratta, a local business man who introduced a more business like approach to the meetings of the association and its executive, during the years of 1964-1967.  Mr K Blake of Beechworth, from l967-l969, strongly pursued district golf development programmes, welcoming into the association two 9 hole sand course clubs, Dederang and Boorhaman.  From l969-l973, a Benalla Solicitor, Mr H Clarke served with strong country week input.  1973-l975 saw Mr Ken Evans, a Mansfield representative, further the district interest in country week and VGA Representation.  It was then l975-l978 that a Mr J Guilfoyle, Wangaratta, largely responsible for country week management and organisation.  From l978-l988, the association was well served by Mr Bob McNamara, a Golden Vale club member of distinction, whose public relations efforts produced considerable harmony throughout the district.  Mr J Hindle of Yarrawonga, l988-l991, who was also a country representative of the VGA Council, ensured a greater understanding of the role of the VGA and its objectives for golf in Victoria and the member districts.  l991-l993 saw Mr J Harrison, of Wodonga, introducing computer programming and other facilities, therefore speeding up association programs and better club contact.  Mr Barrie Webb, of Benalla, served from l993-l997 and at the present time Mr Kelvin Peart, a former member of Northern Golf Club and now a member of Myrtleford Golf Club, was appointed President in 1997 and continues.  (Kelvin currently holds the Australian and world Veterans left hand championships).  Mr Bob Prince of Bright Golf Club is now the Junior Development officer, whilst Mr Stone has moved to Vice President.  Long term Life member and past Secretary for many years Mr Alex McCullough OAM CSM continues to attend Association meetings and regularly represents the association as a guest at VGA metropolitan functions.

The secretaries serving the NEDGA began with Mr CF Henry of Bright l924-l936, Mr A Fisher of Wangaratta l936-l951, Mr J Leach Yarrawonga l951-l955, Mr TV Findlay l955-l963, a Wangaratta representative.  From l963 to l993 a record 30 yrs was served by Mount Beauty representative Mr Alex McCullough, who was to oversee many changes to district programs.  From l993 to the date of this printing, Mr Andrew Walker is serving as secretary and brings to the association considerable knowledge and country week expertise.  The NEDGA's first junior promotions officer was Myrtleford·s Mr Jim Disher, appointed in l977.  It was in l979 that Mr Lyle Grinter of Benalla continued until l982 when the prime mover of this development, Mr Ken Blake of Beechworth, operated until l988.  He was followed by Mr Jim Harrison of Wodonga who served until l991and Mr L Stone, an executive member for many years, took on that function and continues.
